The Premise:

Where do you go next, especially when you feel like you’re having to forge a new path and wish you had guidance and support figuring yourself and your life out?

How do you become a better friend and ally to yourself (and those you love) - rather than yet another voice, telling yourself you’re not good enough and trying to force yourself into a shape that doesn’t feel quite right?

These are potent questions at any time of the year, but you might find them even more present as we approach The New Year (either via the Gregorian calendar on Jan 1st or with the return of the sun and the Winter Solstice in the Northern Hemisphere).

In our modern, capitalist, machine-like, and achievement-oriented society; marking the new year seems to come with a lot of pressure:

• to have goals and clarity on our next steps forward,

• to want to look and be better versions of ourselves,

• to “step into your power to manifest the exact life you want” (which is actually about control), etc.

It’s all about linear progress and arriving at some destination (which is also tied up in your worth). “New Year, New Me” might have begun as a rallying cry for hope or change, but it’s also a way of throwing your past self and all you’ve weathered under the bus.

It doesn’t seem to leave room for those of us who value:

• the slow process of our own becoming;

• or the truth that much of life is not in our control and part of being human seems to be learning to co-create with Spirit; crafting something meaningful and beautiful with the raw, messy materials of this existence.

So how can we honor the New Year in a more meaningful, Spirit-infused way? Are there ancestral practices that can help us honor and cross the threshold of this season with more heart, more listening, and more magic/ ritual?

The Approach:

Divination

It would seem that various forms of divination have been practiced for much of humanity’s existence. While we tend to think of divination as seeking answers to a specific question or outcome (and it can be that), another way to think of it is as practice of deep listening to how the Divine forces are moving or want to move through our lives.

When it comes to looking to the year ahead, divination then, as I practice it, is not about predicting exactly what will happen to you or when or what you “should” do. It’s not about finding answers that come from outside of you or forcing yourself into a shape that isn’t yours to fill.

Instead, it’s a way of listening for overarching themes, archetypes, and lessons making an appearance - where you might encounter Spirit in your life, and how you can best stay in touch with and express your Aliveness (even when it might be showing up in a “blind spot”).

Sometimes it calls us out on where we’re out of alignment, but it also offers us a way back. And it does so in the mythopoetic language of image and archetype - a language that offers more opportunity to bypass our brains and conditioning, and tune into our souls and bodies as we discern our next steps and move into futures our conscious mind might not believe possible.

(In more practical terms, you could also think of it as a focal point for your curiosities, rituals, journaling, etc and a compass point to touch back into when the path is fuzzy and the distractions are everywhere.)

Who It Might Be a Good Fit For:

Lets face it, we all wish life came with a clear instruction manual.

But it doesn’t.

Especially if you, like me, are someone who looks around you at the world and wonders where the curiosity went, where the deep sense of belonging to land and community went, where the pride in beautifully crafted things - whether objects, relationships, or lives - went. If you have a suspicion that somewhere along the way we started forgetting how to be fully alive and fully human - and you’re trying to find your way back to that.

While there might be some cultural breadcrumbs left by our long ago ancestors, hidden beneath pavement and empire, more and more we feel like we’re having to forge a completely new path. And we’re feeling the loneliness and exhaustion of “going it alone” - without mentoring and precedent, without meaningful community, and without the presence of the Otherworld.

This offering of divination through tarot and other intuitive cards is designed with that hunger for more mirroring and more sense of ancestral and Otherworldly connection in mind. It’s also designed to encourage your own courage and creativity - to bridge something like the Old Ways into your everyday life.

But it won’t satisfy you if you come just wanting a quick and easy answer or SMART goals.

It will most likely feel nourishing and enlivening if you:

• are someone who pushes back against goals and rules (even if you’ve set them yourself) but enjoys following curiosities, exploring questions, letting answers come to you when you know where to look;

• find magic practices like vision boards feel one too many steps ahead of where you are right now (what are you even aiming to call in??) and you want a more foundational sense of orientation for whatever rituals you’ll do later;

• are a more visual or sensual person and want something more image-based, a little more mythopoetic and tuned to the subconscious, than a word of the year;

• vibe with my overall stance on embodying more “artisanal” values, a more culturally “indigenous” approach to life and being human, want to be more creature than machine, and can get behind animism and the idea that all life is sentient, teacher, and kin;

• are willing to take fears about the unknown by the hand, set aside the desire to control outcomes, and enter with curiosity and a willingness to be shaped by Life and the Holy;

• are excited to play an active part in listening, but also being responsible for responding, interpreting, and acting on any guidance and insights you receive;

• are seeking a compass, not a dogma, for moments of confusion and overwhelm;

• want to move through life from your heart, soul, intuition, and body - not just your mind;

• understand life as energy and want to get better at discerning, directing, and riding its ebbs and flows;

• want to craft a life that doesn’t just celebrate your personal growth and success, but rather a life where all Aliveness thrives;

• and know or suspect meaning and magic are an essential form of nourishment for us and the wider web of kinship we’re connected with.

In short, if you just want to look at the card and listen to the voice note once and then forget about it, you’re welcome to get one (it might still work with you to some extent in less conscious ways), but you might also find this somewhat disappointing. These are designed to be ritual guides - to be something you engage with and feed with your attention and curiosity, and explore through your lived actions.

Why Get a Card Reading From Someone Else?

Tarot and oracle decks are everywhere these days and given that I actively encourage you to tap into your own wisdom and power, why do I also invite you to get a card reading from an outside source (aka me)?

This is a valid and important question. And ultimately only you can decide what the right path is for you. But here are a few considerations you may wish to factor in:

1) We should always be in our own power AND this is not the same as going it alone. We will always have parts of ourselves in our own blind spots so we need mirroring and reflections from outside sources to help us see ourselves. It may be that the cards on their own serve that purpose for you. It may also be that having someone whose brain doesn’t see things in the exact way yours does helping to translate the card unlocks new insights.

2) If you’re grappling with burnout or purpose anxiety, you’re probably already feeling like you’re shouldering too much. Perhaps it feels nice to let someone else offer you some support and guidance, without ‘doing it all for you’?

3) Tapping into and developing our intuition is never done. It’s an ongoing learning process and you may feel the guidance offered by me, through the PDF is helpful. More than many books out there, I focus on integrating and embodying your connection with your intuition, rather than trying to logically understand it.

4) I am a professional who spends my days tending my relationship with the Otherworld. Which means when I go to reach out to it for guidance, it often responds pretty powerfully and I can interpret it fairly accurately. While everyone has a certain intuitive capacity and there is no gatekeeping the Otherworld, it is full of wild and unpredictable Beings. About Kate:

Wendell Berry predicted the world would divide itself between people who want to live as creatures and people who want to live as machines, and on a society level, the machines seem to be winning. And so though Kate was definitely born more creature, for many years she tried to be a machine - tried to fit in and play by society’s rules. And it left her feeling numb, broken, disconnected, and caught in cycles of burnout. Turns out that someone frequently called an “old soul” and a “witchy-healer-person-thing”; whose presence reminds people of being near standing stones or a community holy well, is probably going to thrive more on “Team Creature”.
